Contracting terms, explained

The official US government website where companies register to do business with federal agencies. A company needs an active SAM.gov registration before it can receive a US federal contract or grant.

A US Department of Defense system that contracting offices use to find, vet and award contracts to local vendors in contingency areas such as Iraq. Vendors register with their company details and receive a JCCS vendor ID.

A six-digit code that describes a line of business. Agencies tag each contract opportunity with one NAICS code, and vendors list the codes they work under in SAM.gov.

A four-character code that describes what the government is buying, such as a service or a type of equipment. It is used alongside the NAICS code on contract records.
